Short Pass Relay: A Dynamic Drill to Sharpen Throwing and Catching Skills

The "Short Pass Relay" is an engaging and fast-paced drill designed to improve players' throwing and catching abilities, focusing on precision, control, and teamwork. Here's an in-depth look at how the drill works, what to expect, and tips for maximizing its effectiveness.

Setup

  • Equipment Needed: 10 cones, 2 footballs (or tennis balls), 2 teams
  • Field Layout: Use four cones to create two parallel running lanes, each 20 yards long. Place an additional cone 10 yards in front of each starting line to mark the throwing spot.

Execution

  1. Team Formation: Divide players into two teams. Each team lines up at the start of their respective lanes, with the first player holding a ball.
  2. Relay Race: On the coach’s signal, the first player in each line runs down the lane, turns back at the end, and heads to the throwing spot.
  3. Passing the Ball: At the throwing spot, the player makes a pass to the next teammate in line, who then repeats the process.
  4. Winning the Race: The first team to have all its players complete the relay wins.

Coaching Points

  • Focus on Control: Players often struggle with throwing on the run, which can lead to overly hard or inaccurate passes. Emphasize the importance of a soft touch and controlled throwing motion.

  • Change It Up: Use a smaller ball, like a tennis ball, to challenge players' catching abilities or add an exercise like push-ups at the end of the lane for added conditioning.
