Understanding Concussions in Youth Football: A Guide for Parents and Coaches

When it comes to youth sports, the safety and well-being of our athletes is a top priority. While concussions are a part of football that we must take seriously, it’s important to approach the topic with care and understanding. At KCFC, we’ve put thoughtful measures in place to ensure that your child is safe, supported, and in the best possible environment to enjoy the sport they love. Our goal is to educate and inform parents about concussions without causing undue concern.

Concussions are a serious concern in youth football, and understanding them is crucial for the safety of young athletes. A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, leading to chemical changes in the brain and possible damage to brain cells. Recognizing the signs, which include confusion, dizziness, and headaches, is essential. If a concussion is suspected, the athlete should be removed from play immediately and not return until cleared by a qualified medical professional.

As a league, KCFC has been committed to player safety since 2011 with the establishment of its Concussion Management Program. Tailored for participants from 5th to 8th grade, the program expanded in 2017 to include younger athletes (ages 5-11) with pediatric ImPACT testing.

The program has four key components:

  1. Partnership with Performance Rehab: Provides discounted baseline concussion tests, supervised testing locations, medical coverage at games, and educational seminars for coaches.

  2. Baseline Testing Program: Using the ImPACT Testing Program, athletes establish a neurological baseline to assist in concussion diagnosis and management. The test, which takes 20-30 minutes, is offered voluntarily for a $10 fee and is administered before the season begins. In the event of a suspected concussion, a follow-up test is compared with the baseline to evaluate recovery.

  3. Coaches Training: Coaches are educated on recognizing concussion symptoms and managing injuries, ensuring they can respond effectively to incidents on the field.

  4. Protocol for Returning to Participate: Injured athletes are evaluated by certified medical staff during games and by coaches during practices. A release from a medical doctor is required before an athlete can return to play after a concussion.

KCFC is dedicated to creating a safe environment for all athletes, with protocols that prioritize their health both on and off the field.
